To become a licensed Real Estate Salesperson in Virginia, the state requires that you successfully complete a 60 hour Principles of Real Estate course. Our course makes it easy to meet all Virginia Real Estate Board requirements. There are 3 ways to complete the course: Full Classroom, Home Study, or FLEX.

You must have successfully completed 180 classroom, correspondence or other forms of distance learning hours of instruction approved by the Real Estate Board (4-forty five hour semester courses).

Students may substitute ONE Related Course for one of the Specific Courses. There are NO substitutions for Brokerage. It is REQUIRED. Moseley-Dickinson offers Brokerage, Finance, Law, Appraisal and Investments (Related Course) either through the classroom or through homestudy.
EXPERIENCE: You must have worked as an active licensed real estate sales person for 36 of the 48 months immediately preceding application for the broker licensing exam. “Active” is defined as an average of at least 40 hours per week.
EXAMINATION: You must have passed a state licensing examination within 12 months prior to application. Moseley-Dickinson offers a 3-day Broker Exam Prep course to assist you in preparing for the state broker’s exam.

Every 2 years, Brokers and Real Estate Sales Licensees must complete 16 hours of continuing education to keep their license active. As well, effective July 1, 2008, Brokers are required to take an extra 8 hour Broker-specific Continuing Education course.
Here are the current 16 hour requirements:
(Please Note: If you received a new real estate salesperson license (active or inactive) AFTER December 31, 2004 , and this is your FIRST TIME RENEWAL , you will need to complete 30 hours of Post License Education instead of Continuing Education to renew your real estate license.)
A. 2 hours of Fair Housing
B. 3 hours of Ethics
C. 1 hour of each of the following: Contracts, Agency, and Legal Updates
D. The remaining 8 hours may be credited by taking Board approved "elective" or "real estate related" courses.

If you received a new salesperson license (active or inactive) AFTER December 31, 2003 , and this is your FIRST TIME RENEWAL , you are required to complete 30 hours of Post License Education instead of Continuing Education. All other Brokers and salespersons who wish to retain active licenses, shall be required to satisfactorily complete 16 hours of Continuing Education courses.
You have some options of the types of courses you take to complete the 30 hour requirement.
There are mandatory Post Licensing course groups known as: tracks; and, elective Post Licensing hours.
You must complete one entire track to receive credit for your mandatory hours. The remaining elective hours may be taken from any Board approved courses within any track.

A. Residential Real Estate Track
Mandatory Topics (15 hours)

VIEW MOSELEY-DICKINSON POST LICENSING COURSE SCHEDULES & REGISTRATION >>

There are 4 category levels of Appraiser's Licenses in Virginia. Here are the 2008 requirements of each:
A. Appraiser Trainee
Trainees must work under the direction of a supervising appraiser.
Complete 75 hrs of qualifying appraisal pre-licensing education, including 15 hour National USPAP course and exam (within the 5 year period immediatly preceding application for licensure).
No experience required
Pass state licensing exam.
B. Licensed Residential Appraiser
May appraise properties of 1-4 residential units with transaction value of less than $1 million, and non-complex, non-residential properties with transaction values up to $250,000.
Complete 150 Creditable hrs of qualifying appraisal pre-licensing education, including 15 hour Hational USPAP course and exam.
Obtain 2000 hrs of experience in no fewer than 12 months.
Pass state licensing exam.
C. Certified Residential Appraiser
May appraise properties of 1-4 residential units regardless of transaction value and non-residential properties with transaction values up to $250,000
Obtained Associate degree, or highter, from an accredited college, junior college, community college or university OR successfully passed a total of at least 21 semester credit hrs of collegiate subject matter courses in: English composition, Principles of Economics (macro or micro), Finance, Algebra, Geometry or higher Mathematics, Statistics, Introduction to Computers (word processing/spreadsheets) and Business or Real Estate Law.
Completed 200 creditable hrs of qualifying appraisal pre-licensing education including 15 hour National USPAP course and exam.
2,500 hrs experience during no fewer than 24 months
Pass state licensing exam.
D. Certified General Appraiser
May appraise all types of real estate and real property regardless of value, complexity or type.
Must have obtained Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited college or university. OR successfully passed a total of at least 30 hrs. collegiate level subject matter courses in: English Composition, Micro Economics, Macro Economics, Finance, Algebra, Geometry or higher Mathematics, Statistics, Introduction to Computers (word processing/spreadsheets), Business or Real Estate Law AND 2 elective courses in Accounting, Geography, Ag-economics, Business Management or Real Estate.
- Complete 300 hrs of appraisal education, including 15 hr National USPAP course & exam.
- 3,000 hrs experience during no fewer than 30 months.
- 1,500 or more must be in non-residential appraisals.
- Pass state licensing exam.
